On 27th July, 2021, youth networks came together at the UN House in Abuja to engage on the passage of the Gender And Equal Opportunities Bill (GEOB). This meeting was hosted by the office of the Distinguished Senator Biodun Olujimi in partnership with UN Women with supported from the Australian government.
Platinum Intervention was represented by Dr. Bisi Olubiyi and Mr. Khalifa Abubakar. The aim of the meeting was to help youth networks understand the content and importance of the bill and to draw support from young people across the country to ensure its passage at the senate.
The event was anchored by Ms Bukky Williams taking all through the journey of the GEOB, the challenges so far, how it was thrown out from NASS due to misperceptions which garnered enemies from various sectors who tagged the bill an abortion bill.
The bill has since been reviewed to adjust the language addressing the contentious parts of the bill for higher chances of acceptability.
At the end of the meeting, all youth networks drafted action points stating what exactly they would do to support the bill.
Empowering women and girls in the 21st century in Nigeria is vital and can be achieved when there’s a law in place protecting their rights. Women empowerment will directly improve the nation and lead to unprecedented growth. As such, we must come together to ensure the passage of this bill.
Thank you.
